June 4-5th Melvern Lake KS

Well I took Rush60 up on his offer to head to Melvern Lake KS to do some camping and fishing with the Brotherhood of Catfishermen (BOC) group. Melvern Lake is about an hour and a half South West of Kansas City MO. It's a 7000 acre lake. I got down on Friday afternoon and got my campsite set up. Rush was running a little late so I got my Kayak all rigged up and just as I was about to launch he made it in, So I paddled in the area of the campsite for a bit. Fishing was slow, had one bass follow my spinner-bait and that was it. It was pretty hot out and wasn't to windy yet.

Rush was finally ready to head out so we paddled eastward going in and out of coves fishing here and there with not much luck, saw a couple carp sunning there selves back in a cove.  We finally decided to paddle back to camp. Well as we rounded the point we ran into some nasty wind and 2-3' waves. It was a tough paddle and apparently I didn't get my hatches sealed on the way and started to take on water. I knew i was taking some on so I started to paddle closer to shore and it finally happened. I tipped over, I managed to lose my camera as well as my fish lipper grip. Drug the kayak up onto the bank and Rush and I got her all drained out and I ensure the hatches were sealed.

Once we made it back to campground, had a little dinner and then Rush took me around to meet some of the BOC members, pretty nice group of guys. They have a  group meeting a few times a year which is something I'm shooting for.  Anyhow Rush and I took our Kayak's out to the Riverpond around 10pm. We paddled up and around to where a creek enters into the lake. We had to maneuver around about 30 lighted bobbers the shore fishermen were using. We glided through the tunnel to the other side of the road. I hooked a piece of squid to my hook and dropped it over the side and wham! Something big took it quick and splashed around, ended up never seeing it or knowing what it was It all happened so fast.
We fished this general area for a little bit, not catching any fish, I did manage to lose one more before leaving. We took out about 12am.

Saturday morning we got up about 630am and headed over to Sundance to put the Kayaks in and paddle about a mile up to where the gar spawn and all the other fish come in to eat the eggs. Once again it was a little windy. It wasn't a bad paddle. We got over to the area and Rush fished among the few boats that were there. I paddled up the shoreline and took two 3lb carp on the fly rod. I paddled back down to where Rush was fishing and he took a nice Channel cat on a piece of shrimp.  We headed back to the trucks and back to camp. Got some lunch and I had to tear down my campsite as I had to be at work today (Sunday). I sure wish that I could of stayed and fish some more but I was trying to beat the weather back home. Barely made it, all in all it was a great trip and I look forward to meeting more of you as the summer goes on! I also want to thank Rush of the BOC, I had a great time!

 June 2010

Well It has been a while since we have updated the site but the good news is, we have made it one year! It has been a great year and out site has been growing! Brett recently had an article published in Missouri Conservationist about Kayak Angling. Since the release of the article today we have seen site traffic increase by leaps and bounds, which is very excting. I have recived many emails about people wanting to know more and thats a great sign!

Please check out and join our forums, let's get together and do some fishing! This weekend June 4-6th a few of us will be heading to Melvern Lake in Kansas. Check out the fourm here under upcoming trips. for more info.

I would like to try and get a large group together for maybe some type of BBQ and some fishing!

I hope everyone stays safe! Once again please feel free to join our forum to introduce yourself and let us know where you found us!

Brett and I fished Truman Lake today from Crowes Crossing in Osceola west to the old quarry. It was a pretty unproductive and slow day. Brett took the first fish of the day, small Crappie off a minnow. I was next with a small Blue Cat dragging a minnow across the bottom as we difted some tree lines. Floated on into the old quarry where Brett took a 14" Largemouth and I took a small Striper. Check out the forum for the full report!
Good luck and stay dry!

Brett and I went out and hit Lake Taneycomo near Rockaway Beach to prefish the area before we meet with the Photographer from Missouri Conservation. I had only previously fished this area from a boat. Started the day with some pretty rough winds, water was whitecapping right into the kayak! I fly fished all day and only managed to pull up two small panfish. Brett was spinfishing and didn't have much luck either. We even tried crusing across mud flats looking for carp. Both of us were new the the whole standing up in the Kayak thing but we managed to do so with out taking a spill!

Hit Taneycomo again in the Rockaway Bach area with the photographer. Skunked! We went way up into Bull Creek with no luck. Saw a couple good sized carp sunning their selves but spooked them before I got a chance to cast to them. Not as windy today as the previous day. All in all it was a very nice day topped off with a nice lunch from Fat Daddy's Backyard BBQ in Forsyth.

So today I decided i'd fish the upper portion of Lake Taneycomo I put in at the MDC ramp below Table Rock dam. I put in about 1030 or so and floated for a bit. Pretty slow day. The siren blew around 1100ish or so, had two generators running, now being as this was my first time floating Taneycomo I wasn't sure how the flow would affect my paddle back up stream. I will tell you for sure that next time I will probally set up some sort of shuttle. It was a pretty tough paddle upstream from the island to the boat ramp. I had to hug the South bank pretty tight. Thank god I have a rudder on my kayak, it helped keep the nose of the kayak inline with the current and not letting the nose get pushed around by the current. I slid into a few eddies to take a break from the non stop paddling up stream. Fishing was very slow, when I would slide into an eddy I would make a few cast out into the seams my 3 wt fly rod, the shorter rod has a better feel when casting from the sitting postion. It's 50/50 wether or not I'll put in and paddle back up. I definatly would not try it with two generators running wide open. Thats all for now!

Be safe!
